Start with the study type
A laboratory experiment, an animal study, an observational report, and a randomized human trial answer different questions. Results from one level should not be presented as though they automatically prove conclusions at another.

Distinguish signals from established findings

Read beyond the abstract
Abstracts summarize a paper, but important limitations usually appear in the methods, results, and discussion. Look for study duration, missing data, conflicts of interest, selection criteria, and whether the reported outcome was defined before the study began.
Use primary sources when possible
Reviews are useful for orientation, but primary papers and trial records make it easier to verify exactly what was tested. PubMed, ClinicalTrials.gov, regulatory records, and the journal article itself are strong starting points for source checking.
